Residents urged to report brown bear sightings
Latvia has at least 190 brown bears; DAP calls on the public to report observations via the "Nature Data" portal.

According to the Nature Conservation Agency (DAP), at least 190 brown bears currently inhabit Latvia. To better assess population size and distribution, DAP uses systematic monitoring and genetic analyses, but public reports are also crucial.
Anyone who spots a bear or signs of its presence – footprints, hair, droppings, scratches, or damage – is encouraged to report it on the "Nature Data" portal. The report must include the exact date and GPS coordinates, along with time-stamped photos or videos if possible. Front paw prints are especially important; they should be photographed from above and measured at the widest point. If no measuring tape is available, a bank card or matchbox can be placed next to the print for scale.
In 2025, 827 random bear observations or traces have already been recorded. DAP emphasizes that despite increasing bear numbers and expansion into new areas, the chance of encountering a bear in the forest remains low, as these animals are very cautious and avoid humans. Even experienced researchers rarely see bears in person during monitoring.
If a bear poses a threat to human health or life, report it immediately to the local municipality and DAP. More information is available at www.daba.gov.lv.
