Hunt claims third gold as Asher-Smith makes history at Europeans
Amy Hunt won her third gold medal of the European Championships in Birmingham with the women's 4x100m relay, while Dina Asher-Smith equalled a historic record with her seventh title.
Great Britain's women's 4x100m relay team won the hosts' second gold medal of the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham on Saturday, as 24-year-old Amy Hunt secured her third gold in six days following individual wins in the 100m and 200m.
Hunt will now attempt to become the first athlete in the championship's 92-year history to win four gold medals at a single edition, with the mixed 4x100m relay taking place on Sunday.
For team-mate Dina Asher-Smith, the relay win marked her seventh European title, ten years after her first. The 30-year-old's tally now matches the record shared by Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Croatian discus thrower Sandra Elkasevic. Following her 200m bronze on Thursday, she had already equalled Polish sprinter Irena Szewinska's record of ten championship medals overall.
The relay squad also included 21-year-old student midwife Success Eduan and Imani-Lara Lansiquot, who ran the anchor leg to finish in 42.05 seconds, more than a second ahead of silver medallists Switzerland (43.12) and bronze medallists Poland (43.15).
Hunt praised her team-mates after the race, describing Asher-Smith as the most decorated European athlete in history and calling the whole quartet "superwomen." Asher-Smith, who made her senior debut in the 4x100m squad at the 2013 World Championships, has since collected 22 senior international medals and was the last athlete to complete a sprint treble at the European Championships, in 2018.
Hunt, who won an individual world silver medal in Tokyo last year following an injury-hit start to her senior career, is now looking to build on her continental success at global level in the years ahead.
