Handball: SK Latgols beat Ulbrokas SK 29-25 away from home
In the Latvian men's handball championship top-division Group A, Ludza's SK Latgols won 29-25 at Ulbrokas SK in Saurieši on 11 October, taking control in the second half.
On Sunday, 11 October, in a Latvian men's handball championship match (SynotTip Premier League, Group A), Ludza-based SK Latgols won 29-25 away to Ulbrokas SK in Saurieši. The visitors trailed 12-14 at half-time, but took the initiative after the break and secured the win in the closing stages.
First half
Ulbrokas SK began the better of the two sides and led 3-1 after just under five minutes. SK Latgols levelled several times, but the hosts held a narrow lead for most of the half. Between the 11th and 18th minutes the Ludza side was shorthanded twice, and Ulbrokas SK used this to build a three-goal lead (10-7) in the 18th minute.
Five minutes before the interval the visitors drew level and went ahead for the first time in the match, 12-11. However, the hosts scored three goals in a row near the end of the half and went into the break leading 14-12.
Second half
The start of the second half was evenly balanced, and the lead changed hands several times. The decisive moment came in the last ten minutes: with the score at 22-22, SK Latgols scored four unanswered goals to make it 26-22. Ulbrokas SK tried to fight back, but the visitors held on to their advantage.
Top scorers
For the winners, Aivars Strazds, Gintars Ūzulnieks and Kristers Miškāns each scored six goals. Ūzulnieks also converted all four of his seven-metre penalty throws. Alvis Zbitkovskis added four.
For Ulbrokas SK, Raivis Kronis was the most effective with eight goals, while Ņikita Golubovs, Gustavs Mednis and Andris Lazda each scored three.
Final score: Ulbrokas SK – SK Latgols 25-29 (14-12 at half-time).
