Gunārs Ķirsons seeks to trademark his own surname

Gunārs Ķirsons, the former owner of catering and food retail company AS "Lido" who is now developing a new restaurant chain concept called "Daba," has filed an application to register his own surname as a trademark. This is according to information published by Latvia's Patent Office.
The application was submitted in mid-June, with the surname to appear in the trademark in capital letters. The Patent Office has already determined that the mark is eligible for registration.
Objection period
The decision is not yet final. Until October 20, other parties have the right to file objections against the trademark's registration. Grounds for objection can include the mark lacking sufficient distinctiveness, the mark merely describing the relevant goods or services, the application having been filed in bad faith, or the mark being too similar to an already registered trademark in the same or a related field of activity.
If no objections are filed within the deadline, or if any objections are rejected, Ķirsons's surname will officially become a registered trademark, which he could then use in connection with his new "Daba" restaurant concept.
