Time capsule sealed into foundations of Grobiņa BESS energy storage park
Construction of a battery energy storage system park in western Latvia, led by Liepāja ESS and built by Enersense, has been underway for six months, marking the milestone with a time capsule embedded in its foundations. The project, which will use Tesla Megapack batteries, is the first of its kind in the Baltics.
A battery energy storage system (BESS) park near Grobiņa in western Latvia has been under construction for six months. To mark this development milestone, a time capsule containing a message for future generations was sealed into the facility's foundations, honoring the engineers, designers, electricians, builders and other specialists behind the project.
The park is being built by Enersense on behalf of Latvian energy storage company Liepāja ESS. Enersense announced the roughly €7 million contract in February 2026. The project is the company's first full-cycle BESS EPC undertaking — covering everything from preparatory works to commissioning — and the largest BESS project in Enersense's history to date.
What the project includes
Construction covers the BESS park itself, a 110 kV underground cable connection to the Grobiņa substation of AS "Augstsprieguma tīkls," a 110/33 kV power transformer, a control building, access roads and other infrastructure needed for the facility's operation. The park will use Tesla Megapack battery systems, making it the first project of this type in the Baltic states.
Arnis Odiņš, director of SIA "Enersense Latvija," called it the most ambitious BESS infrastructure project the company has carried out in Latvia so far, noting that the work has been done using the company's own resources, from construction to building the 110 kV grid connection. Liepāja ESS head Rolands Lūsveris said the Grobiņa project is NGEN Group's first battery energy storage project in the Baltics and currently the company's most significant development project in Europe, expressing confidence in the choice of Enersense as EPC partner.
The project is also being carried out together with partners SIA "Elnetworks" and SIA "Firma L4." Elnetworks board member Agris Robs noted that designing a project of this scale usually takes eight to twelve months, yet the first version was completed in under five months — making it the largest BESS project Elnetworks has implemented in Latvia to date. Firma L4 construction supervisor Māris Silavs said the team is meeting planned deadlines while maintaining high work quality.
