Google's Gemini app hits one billion monthly users

Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that the Gemini app has surpassed one billion monthly active users, becoming the 14th Google product to reach that milestone. This puts Gemini on pace with OpenAI's ChatGPT, which crossed the same threshold in June.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced via X that the Gemini app has become one of the company's fastest-growing products, recently surpassing one billion monthly active users. According to Pichai, this makes Gemini the 14th Google product to reach the milestone.

The growth puts Gemini roughly on pace with OpenAI's ChatGPT, which hit one billion monthly active users back in June. Notably, the figure applies specifically to the Gemini app and excludes users who interact with Google's AI through other channels, such as AI Mode in Search, which has separately reached more than one billion monthly active users worldwide.

Integration and new features

Google has been steadily embedding Gemini across its product lineup, including Search, Workspace, Android and the standalone app. The company also continues to roll out new models and capabilities, among them Gemini 3.5 Flash, which Google says is built to improve coding performance and autonomous AI-agent tasks.

Google also shared usage figures showing how people engage with the assistant: 63% of Gemini users interact with it directly via voice. The app now generates more than 150 million images per day. Gemini's reach extends beyond Google's own ecosystem as well, with the company reporting more than 100 million active users on iOS.

The milestone follows shortly after Google's Q2 2026 earnings call, during which the company reported over 950 million monthly users overall, with daily active users tripling over the past year. The announcement also comes ahead of Google's upcoming Made by Google event, where additional Gemini-powered features for Pixel devices are expected to be unveiled.
