Riga to close trolleybus route 1 during Gertrudes Street renovation
Starting Monday, August 10, the 1st trolleybus route will be closed as renovation works begin on a section of Gertrudes Street. Parking restrictions will also apply for residents with permits.

Riga municipal transport company has announced that on Monday, August 10, restoration work will begin on Gertrudes Street, between Aleksandra Čaka and Krišjāņa Barona streets. From the same day, trolleybus route 1 will be suspended.
Passengers who normally use route 1 are advised to use other public transport services. The route runs along Valmieras, Avotu, Aleksandra Čaka and Krišjāņa Barona streets, where numerous other routes operate towards the city centre. As an alternative, bus route 20 is mentioned, which goes from Pētersalas Street through the centre to the intersection of Matīsa, Avotu and Valmieras streets, bringing passengers close to the previous trolleybus route.
The renovation will also change parking arrangements. Restrictions will affect municipal paid parking spaces on Gertrudes Street managed by “Rīgas satiksme”. Residents holding a permit for the area may temporarily lose their usual space. In such cases, the permit allows parking in the paid zone on the street section where the residence is declared, as well as in adjacent blocks within the same or lower tariff zone. If no space is available there, the permit can be used at any other available paid parking location listed on the permit.
The total project cost is €1,243,373 including VAT, of which SIA “Rīgas ūdens” will contribute €251,630 and the Riga municipality €991,743. Work is expected to start in August and last six months. The project includes renewing the roadway and pavement while preserving the street’s cultural and historical character. The street space will be improved with new benches, bicycle racks and tree plantings.
