Hottest Day of the Year: Thunderstorms Expected in Latvia on the Longest Day

Latvia will experience a hot and stormy summer solstice with temperatures reaching +25...+29°C, followed by heavy thunderstorms, possible hail, and gusty winds in the afternoon.

The longest day of the year, when the sun stays above the horizon the longest, will be hot and locally turbulent in Latvia. According to weather forecasts, June 21 will see variable cloud cover, with air warming up to +25...+29°C. Coastal areas will be slightly cooler, between +20 and +25°C.

From the afternoon onward, the weather will change: many parts of the country will experience thunder showers, which locally can be very intense, accompanied by hail. Winds will generally be light, but during storms gusts may reach up to 20 meters per second.

Night Will Be Warm and Dry

After the storms, the night will bring variable cloudiness but no precipitation. Winds will remain light. Nighttime temperatures will drop to +15...+20°C, except in eastern Latvia where it will be a few degrees cooler. In Riga, the temperature will fall to +18...+20°C, and the weather will be dry.

In the capital, the longest day will also be hot – the thermometer will climb to +27...+29°C. The morning will be sunny, but clouds will increase in the afternoon, bringing a thunderstorm with heavy rain. Winds will be light, becoming gusty during the storm. At night, clouds will vary, but the weather will stay dry and warm.

Residents are advised to be cautious during the afternoon storms, as they may be briefly intense.
