The French company Sesterce intends to build a giant data center in Finland with an estimated cost of €10 billion, Finnish public broadcaster Yle reported on Thursday. The plans emerged shortly after Google announced it would invest at least €13 billion in artificial intelligence infrastructure in Finland over the next two years.

Location and technical details

The facility is to be located in Jämsä, between Tampere and Jyväskylä, on the grounds of a paper mill that closed in 2021. Sesterce said the data center will house liquid-cooled AI supercomputers that will require 200 megawatts of power supply.

Contract and investors

The company says the investment decision has already been taken and an agreement has been signed with a future client. It did not name the client, saying only that it is one of the two leading AI developers. The project's investors have not been disclosed either.

Sesterce Group was registered in Marseille in 2021 and had a turnover of €11.95 million in 2024.

Landowner and jobs

Kaipola Green Port, which owns the former paper mill site, confirmed that negotiations with Sesterce on selling the entire plot are under way and at an advanced stage.

Around 2,000 people are expected to be involved in construction, and once completed the facility will provide jobs for about 300 people. When the paper mill closed, it employed more than 400 people.
