Campaign teams for France's presidential candidates are stepping up efforts to secure the financing needed to run their campaigns, turning to bank loans, public donation appeals and other fundraising methods.

The picture varies significantly across the political field, with some candidates finding it easier than others to raise the necessary funds. Particular focus has fallen on Rassemblement National leader Marine Le Pen and whether she will be able to obtain a loan from a French bank this year for her campaign.

Government plan falls through

An initiative from the French Prime Minister's office, Matignon, that would have offered a public guarantee to candidates seeking campaign loans has reportedly collapsed, leaving candidates dependent on commercial banks and private donors to cover their costs.

The issue is examined in detail by POLITICO journalists Paul de Villepin and Jason Wiels, who also write the Paris Influence newsletter. The discussion was hosted by Anthony Lattier as part of a POLITICO podcast covering French political affairs.

Campaign financing has long been a decisive factor in French presidential races, since candidates without sufficient funds struggle to mount a full campaign, including advertising, events and staffing a nationwide operation.
