France sets presidential election dates: April 18 and May 2, 2027

France will hold its presidential election on April 18 and May 2, 2027, an executive source confirmed Tuesday. Marine Le Pen's far-right National Rally sees the vote as its best chance yet to take power.

France's next presidential election is scheduled for April 18 (first round) and May 2 (second round) in 2027, according to an executive source who spoke on Tuesday, confirming earlier media reports. The official announcement is expected Wednesday during the Council of Ministers meeting.

Marine Le Pen's anti-immigration National Rally (RN) party views next year's contest as its strongest opportunity yet to win power. Polls have repeatedly indicated that the far right could lead in the first round, though it remains unclear who the party's candidate will be.

Le Pen hopes to run for president for a fourth time, having placed third in 2012 and then lost twice in run-offs to current President Emmanuel Macron, who is serving his second and final term. She will stand as the RN candidate unless an appeals court on July 7 bans her from holding office over an alleged fake jobs scheme in the European Parliament.

Under the French constitution, the presidential election must be held between 20 and 35 days before the end of Macron's current five-year term.
