Shopkeepers in the French cities of Lyon and Orléans spent Friday, 23 October, covering windows with wooden boards and reinforcing entrances as they prepare for weekend protests. Orléans is set to host the congress of the National Rally, a French right-wing political party, while demonstrations are approaching in Lyon. Business owners fear damage and disruption.

In Lyon, workers were filmed on Friday putting up wooden panels and protective fencing outside City Hall, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Chamber of Commerce. Shops along Rue de la République were also being secured, with carpenters cutting boards and covering windows.

Beyond boarding up, shopkeepers are removing valuable stock from display. The precautions reflect concerns about possible violence and property damage, although there is no confirmation that such incidents will occur during the demonstrations.

Security in Orléans

In Orléans, businesses along the planned protest route are taking similar precautions. The city will host the National Rally's congress over the weekend, and nearly 3,000 police officers and security personnel will be deployed.

Between 20,000 and 30,000 protesters are expected to gather against the event, which has raised concerns about possible disruption in the city.
