French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle is leaving the Middle East region and returning to its home port in Toulon. The vessel had been deployed in the area since May.

Macron stated on social media platform X that the decision was made after the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran on June 17, confirming the unblocking of the Strait of Hormuz. Following these positive changes and constructive talks with the Sultan of Oman, France decided to adjust its operational posture in the region.

At the same time, France is maintaining its mine-sweeping capabilities in the region, including two minehunters escorted by two frigates and a patrol aircraft. These forces remain ready to work with partners to fully restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Macron emphasized that France remains fully mobilized and will continue to adjust its forces according to the evolving situation and security needs in the region.

Earlier in May, France deployed the Charles de Gaulle to the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden in preparation for a future mission to restore free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
