Flintoff steps down as England Lions head coach

Former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, 48, has stepped down as head coach of England Lions, a role he had held since September 2024. In his farewell statement, he thanked England managing director Rob Key for entrusting him with one of the most significant positions in English cricket.

Flintoff was named head coach of Sydney Thunder, an Australian Big Bash franchise, in June, marking his first overseas T20 coaching assignment. He had initially planned to keep both roles, leaving a scheduled Lions tour of South Africa early to join Thunder, but has now decided to leave the national set-up entirely.

Flintoff said the decision to step away was not easy, describing his pride in developing some of the country's best young cricketers and thanking the coaching staff for their support. He said he was looking forward to starting with Thunder later this year and seeing where his coaching path leads.

Flintoff also spent two seasons coaching Northern Superchargers in The Hundred, guiding the Leeds-based team to fourth and third-place finishes. He was not kept on for the 2026 season after the franchise changed ownership to the Sunrisers group. Before joining the Lions, Flintoff had informally helped coach England's white-ball sides after leaving his presenting role on the TV show Top Gear.

His final assignment with the Lions was South Africa A's tour of England in May and June, during which his side lost both four-day matches and two of three 50-over games. England and Wales Cricket Board men's performance director Ed Barney praised Flintoff's impact on the Lions programme and the coaches who worked alongside him, wishing him well in his future career.

Mike Yardy will take over as head coach for the four-day match against a Professional County Club Select XI, serving as Pakistan's warm-up fixture ahead of their three-Test series against England, starting 12 August in Beckenham. The Lions will also face Sri Lanka in two T20 warm-up matches in September.
