Everton of Liverpool defeated Coventry, managed by Frank Lampard, 3-1 at home on Friday in the opening match of round 10 of the English Premier League, the top level of football in England. It was the club's second win of the week: on Monday Everton beat Newcastle 1-0 to complete round nine. After the victory Everton are fifth in the table with 16 points, while Coventry are 16th with 9.

How the match unfolded

The first half ended goalless. Everton's Ukrainian defender Vitaliy Mykolenko and 19-year-old Harrison Armstrong both had sharp shots early on, but Armstrong was denied a first Premier League goal by an opposing defender. Coventry then took control, but Japan's Tatsuhiro Sakamoto and Jack Rudoni failed to convert their chances.

Ivorian Jan Gbo, signed this summer from Toulouse for 12 million euros, was in the right place in Everton's crowded penalty area and put the visitors ahead in the 52nd minute.

Everton responded straight away. Tierno Barry headed in a Mykolenko cross at the far post. Five minutes later the 24-year-old French striker struck again, putting the hosts 2-1 up in the 61st minute. Keiran Dewsbury-Hall sealed the result in the 81st minute, finishing a Barry pass at the near post.

Barry's form

Over the last three games, since last Thursday, Barry has scored four goals and set up two. He is joint third in the league's top-scorer list this season with six goals.

What next

After the international break Everton face Brentford, while Coventry host London side Crystal Palace. Everton manager David Moyes was facing Coventry in the Premier League for the first time; he has now beaten every one of the 45 sides he has met in the competition.
