Tensions are rising sharply in the Horn of Africa as Ethiopia's army advances toward the Tigrayan regional capital, with fighting against Tigrayan rebel forces intensifying in recent days. At the same time, new explosions have been reported in the capital, Addis Ababa, suggesting the conflict is spreading beyond Tigray's borders.

Adding to the volatile situation, Ethiopia and neighboring Eritrea have recently severed diplomatic relations, a move that deepens regional instability and raises fears of a wider confrontation in the Horn of Africa.

In response, the African Union has publicly urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could widen the conflict further. The organization has expressed concern that the combination of Ethiopia-Eritrea tensions and the fighting in Tigray could escalate into a broader regional crisis.

Other regional developments

The broader program also covered other notable stories from the region, including a growing trend of urban Ivorians turning to agriculture. Civil servants, entrepreneurs and traders in Abidjan are increasingly spending weekends at farms in the countryside, seeking extra income from crops such as cocoa, although managing a plantation remotely brings its own difficulties.

The report also touched on Senegal's preparations for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, set to take place in Dakar — the first Olympic event ever held on the African continent. Senegal's Minister of Sports, Djirèye Clotilde Coly, emphasized that the Games carry significance extending well beyond sport.
