ESPN NFL draft analyst Matt Miller has announced he is stepping away from his role indefinitely as he recovers from a devastating car crash in Missouri that led to the amputation of his left arm. He also faces a law enforcement investigation into possible financial misconduct connected to what he billed as side charity work.

The crash occurred on June 18, when Miller crossed into oncoming traffic on a state highway and collided with a semi-tractor trailer truck. He was flown to a hospital, where doctors amputated his left arm to save his life. Miller, 42, also suffered multiple fractures and broken ribs, describing his recovery as “a long road.”

Following the news of the crash, an online fundraising campaign raised more than $50,000 to help cover Miller's medical costs. However, the campaign was paused after complaints emerged that Miller had accepted payments for services—such as administering fantasy football leagues and providing scouting lessons—without delivering what was promised. Some complainants said they paid up to $500 for charity fantasy leagues but could not reach Miller to collect winnings or learn where the charitable proceeds went.

Sports news website Awful Announcing reported speaking to at least seven people with similar accounts, and over 40 more contacted them after the initial reporting. The outlet also found that a charity run by Miller was forcibly dissolved in 2019 due to compliance failures. Additionally, the Missouri attorney general's office confirmed an open investigation into the matter, urging anyone who believes they were misled to come forward.

In his first statement since the investigation was revealed, Miller did not address the probe but confirmed the success of his surgeries, including a femur and patella operation that saved his left leg, and expressed hope for a prosthetic replacement. He stated he is stepping away indefinitely from ESPN to focus on healing. ESPN confirmed the leave is medical in nature and likely to be extended, with the company also expected to address the attorney general's investigation in due course.
