The European Union took a major step forward on Friday, June 12, towards admitting Ukraine and Moldova into the bloc. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on social media that all 27 member states had unanimously supported launching the first cluster of accession negotiations with both countries.

The first cluster, which will be officially opened at an intergovernmental conference on Monday, will focus on fundamentals – EU values, the rule of law, and the functioning of democratic institutions. This part is considered the backbone of the accession process.

Von der Leyen stressed that the decision is a testament to Ukraine and Moldova's determination and reform efforts, despite the challenges they face. She said it sends a signal that the peace, stability, and opportunities offered by the EU remain compelling.

“Enlargement is a strategic choice that strengthens peace, security, and prosperity across Europe. In a world of growing uncertainty, a larger European Union is in our common interest,” the Commission chief added. She also noted that enlargement remains one of the EU's greatest success stories and the best investment in a shared future.
