Failed attempt to appoint an ally

EKRE leader Martin Helme pushed for Viljandi Deputy Mayor Silvia Takkel (EKRE) to hire a political advisor he recommended. Helme claimed Takkel, lacking political experience, needed assistance. His preferred candidate was Urmet Elmaste, an EKRE councilor in Viljandi and a board member of the party's district organization.

Selection committee decision

A five-member selection committee instead chose Social Democrat Henri Kaselo, a former mayor of Kohtla-Järve. Takkel considered Kaselo the best candidate, but Helme disagreed.

Helme's response

According to Sakala, Helme angrily reprimanded Takkel at the EKRE congress in Tallinn on June 6, stating that people were dissatisfied with her. He also indicated his next step would be to install Elar Niglas, a former deputy mayor of Türi, as Takkel's replacement. Takkel said she has no intention of resigning.
