Eckert Stays on as Southampton Boss as Spygate Ban Is Suspended
An independent FA commission has given Tonda Eckert a six-week ban from football but suspended it until the end of next season. The Southampton manager keeps his job and has also been fined £28,000.

Tonda Eckert can carry on as Southampton manager after a Football Association (FA) independent regulatory commission handed him a suspended ban over his part in the so-called Spygate affair.
The commission imposed a six-week ban from all football on the German coach, but suspended it until the end of next season. Eckert was also fined £28,000 and reprimanded. The FA had sought a three-month ban, yet the panel cited considerable mitigation, particularly genuine contrition. It is not yet known whether the FA will appeal.
Eckert was sanctioned for three breaches of FA Rule E3.1. The ban would come into force if he were found to be involved in any further spying before the end of next season.
Club and owner welcome ruling
Southampton said it hoped the decision closed a regrettable chapter and that steps had been taken to prevent such errors of judgement happening again. Owner Dragan Solak said the club had already suffered enough and expressed confidence that the manager had learned from the episode. He described the FA process as a positive experience but criticised the English Football League (EFL), saying the club would not forget how it had been treated.
Background
In May, Southampton were expelled from the Championship play-offs after admitting they had spied on training sessions of Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough ahead of the semi-final. The club was also given a four-point deduction for this season. An EFL commission ruled that Eckert had authorised the spying, calling it a contrived and determined plan from the top down.
The most serious incident took place at Middlesbrough's training base on 7 May, where club intern William Salt was reportedly seen pointing a phone at a session. He has since been given a permanent role in Southampton's academy.
Eckert apologised in June, saying he did not know the practice was banned. He was appointed permanent manager in December 2025, and Southampton currently sit 13th in the Championship.
