The European Athletics Championships got underway in Birmingham, with the opening day of competition producing champions and medalists in five different disciplines.
Among the standout results was a win by Norwegian runner Jakob Ingebrigtsen in the 5000 metres. The victory marked his fourth consecutive European Championship gold medal in the event.
Notably, Ingebrigtsen skipped competitions at the start of the season in order to focus his preparation specifically on this race, aiming to arrive at the championship in peak condition.
The opening day also saw strong showings from athletes representing the Netherlands and Italy, who featured among the winners and medalists across the other four disciplines contested.
