The European Parliament in Strasbourg has discussed whether the European Union is doing enough to reduce hybrid threats to the Baltic states. The issue was debated by Roberts Zīle, a Vice-President of the European Parliament from Latvia, and Petras Auštrevičius, a Lithuanian member of the European Parliament.

A hybrid threat is a combination of non-military and military means used to pressure or harm a country without declaring open war. The participants noted that the Baltic states are clearly exposed to such a threat. In their view, this is shown by the fact that unidentified drones are entering Baltic airspace more and more often.

What the discussion was about

The focus was on the practical benefit of European security initiatives. In other words, whether the measures currently being carried out in Europe genuinely help reduce the specific threats affecting the Baltic region.

The source text gives no figures on drone incidents, nor a detailed overview of the initiatives discussed or the conclusions of the debate. All that is known is that two members of parliament discussed the topic, one from Latvia and the other from Lithuania.

Why it matters

The appearance of unidentified drones in Baltic airspace raises questions about how well protected the region is and how effectively shared European security mechanisms work. A debate in the European Parliament is one way for these questions to reach the European-level agenda.
