European Central Bank launches survey on new euro banknote designs

The European Central Bank (ECB) has published the selected design proposals for the next euro banknote series and is inviting people across Europe to share their views in an online survey. The proposals are based on two themes – “European culture” and “Rivers and birds” – with each of the ten designs illustrating one of them. The survey runs until 21 September 2026 and is available on the ECB’s website.

The design proposals were chosen through an EU-wide design contest. More than 1,200 graphic designers submitted entries, and 25 were invited to develop proposals for one or both themes. An independent jury of 21 experts from fields including graphic design, communication, neuroscience and history then selected the ten best proposals. The jury members were nominated by the eurozone’s central banks.

In addition to the public survey, an independent research company will carry out a separate poll using identical questions to gather the views of a representative sample of eurozone residents. Once the final design concept has been chosen, the ECB will publish a report on the results of both surveys. Public opinion is seen as a key element of the Eurosystem’s inclusive approach.

The European Council is expected to take a final decision on the new banknote design by the end of the year. The decision will draw on several sources, including the design contest jury’s conclusions, a technical assessment and the results of both surveys.

The new banknotes will feature improved anti-counterfeiting elements, making them easier to authenticate. Accessibility will also be enhanced, including for people with visual impairments. Issuing new banknote series periodically allows the ECB to take advantage of technological progress to stay ahead of counterfeiters.
