Finland and Germany claim European Championships marathon titles
Finland's Alisa Vainio set a new championship record to win the women's marathon at the European Athletics Championships on Sunday, while Germany's Amanal Petros claimed the men's title with a new event record.
Finnish runner Alisa Vainio won the women's marathon at the European Athletics Championships on Sunday, completing the course in two hours, 22 minutes and 26 seconds — a new championship record.
Hungary's Lili Vindics-Tota finished second with a personal best of two hours, 27 minutes and 21 seconds, while home favorite Abbie Donnelly of Great Britain took third place in two hours, 27 minutes and 33 seconds.
Men's race
In the men's marathon, Eritrean-born German athlete Amanal Petros, a silver medalist at the World Championships, took the win with a new event record of two hours, nine minutes and 11 seconds.
Italy's Pietro Riva finished second in two hours, nine minutes and 18 seconds, and Israel's Getahun Ajale placed third with a time of two hours, nine minutes and 21 seconds.
Runners from several other countries, including Sweden, France, Great Britain and Hungary, also placed within the top ten in both races.
