The spread of West Nile virus has intensified in Europe. The virus is carried by mosquitoes, so travellers from Latvia also need to be careful. This was reported by the Latvian Radio programme "Kā labāk dzīvot", in which an epidemiologist spoke.

Meanwhile, outbreaks of dengue and chikungunya fever have been observed in tropical and subtropical countries, where many people are now keen to travel in search of warmth. These diseases are also spread by mosquitoes.

Travellers therefore face risks both in Europe and in more distant warm destinations. The programme stressed that mosquito-borne diseases should be taken into account when planning a trip.
