Unusually warm weather expected in Europe, but no heatwave for Latvia

In the second half of October, temperatures in Central and Eastern Europe may run 5–10 degrees above normal, reaching up to +23°C in parts of Poland. Latvia is forecast to stay mostly dry, with daytime highs of +9 to +15°C.

Weather across Europe is set to change in the coming days: under the influence of a large anticyclone (a high-pressure system), calmer conditions will settle over many areas, and later warmer air will flow into Central Europe from the south. In Latvia, forecasters do not expect a significant warm spell. The weather will be mostly dry, with moderately mild daytime temperatures.

Why Europe is warming up

According to the meteorological portal DobraPogoda24, the anticyclone will develop between western and northern Europe and then move east and southeast. While it remains over the region, the air will stay cool. Once its centre shifts eastward, winds will change direction and begin carrying warmth from the south. An Atlantic cyclone will also help drive the warm air flow.

In Spain, summer-like temperatures have been recorded in recent days: +33.2°C in Seville and +32.1°C in Huelva.

Poland and the wider region

In Poland, the warmth is expected to be most pronounced from about 20 to 24 October, with temperatures in many places reaching +17 to +23°C, mainly in the south and in some central and western regions. Meteorologists say such figures are unusually high for the second half of October. In Central and Eastern Europe, temperatures in this period could be five to ten degrees above the seasonal norm.

The warmth will be felt mainly during the day. At night and in the early morning the air will cool quickly to between zero and +6°C, and ground frost is possible in lower-lying areas.

Weather in Latvia

This weekend and next week Latvia will see little precipitation. In the second half of this week, brief rain is expected in places, mostly in Kurzeme. Winds will mainly be light, with a stronger southerly wind at times on the coast. At night, temperatures in the east of the country will drop to 0 to -2°C in places, while elsewhere they will stay above zero, with fog in some areas. Daytime highs will be +9 to +15°C.

Most of next week will be shaped by the anticyclone, so conditions will be mainly dry, though cloud may move in, and temperatures will not change sharply. According to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, it will turn colder at the end of October, with average temperatures two degrees below normal. Over the past month, every day in Latvia has been warmer than normal.
