Latvian mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Dzhigurs drew with the experienced Jagelo in a bout for the Bushido organisation's European champion's belt. The fight was one of the main events of the evening, and its outcome has sparked debate, because the Latvian was in line for a win but lost it because of a penalty.

What happened

According to reports, the judges had initially awarded the victory to Dzhigurs. However, the Latvian had one point taken away for exceeding the weight limit, which turned the result into a draw.

The account of the weigh-in is as follows: before the fight Dzhigurs reportedly stepped on the scales, but his opponent's representatives did not record his weight. He then went to eat and was later required to weigh in again. On the second attempt his weight was already above the set limit, so a one-point penalty was applied. In the end this prevented him from winning the fight and the belt.

Dzhigurs' record

Before this bout Dzhigurs was unbeaten in his professional MMA career, having won all five of his fights.

Boxing bout on the same card

On the same event, Latvian boxer Milans Volkovs also celebrated a win. In an eight-round fight he beat Britain's Joel McIntyre on points. At the end of the third round Volkovs rocked his opponent, but the British fighter was saved by the bell. Volkovs stayed on top for the rest of the bout and took the victory.

It was Volkovs' 13th win as a professional boxer. He has also lost four times and fought one draw.
