Dombrava's remark on border cameras catches Saeima committee head off guard

Interior Minister Jānis Dombrava said on television that surveillance cameras installed on the Latvia-Belarus border had not been connected. The news came as a surprise to the head of the responsible Saeima committee, which now plans to seek further explanation.

Interior Minister Jānis Dombrava of the National Alliance said this week during a television program that technical problems had been found at the Latvia-Belarus border: surveillance cameras had been installed there but were never actually connected.

The statement came as a surprise to the head of the Saeima committee responsible for overseeing such matters, who had not previously been informed of any such issue. As a result, the committee intends to formally ask the minister for a more detailed explanation of why the installed cameras were not functioning and what is being done to address the situation.

It remains unclear how long the cameras were disconnected or what impact this may have had on border security monitoring.
