Car flips onto roof after two-vehicle crash on Deglava bridge in Riga
Two cars collided on Riga's Augusta Deglava bridge on Friday, with one vehicle tumbling and landing on its roof, blocking traffic toward Pļavnieki.
A traffic accident occurred on Friday on the Augusta Deglava bridge in Riga, involving a Ford and a Toyota. After the collision, the red Toyota rolled over several times and came to rest on its roof, while both vehicles blocked nearly the entire roadway, causing significant disruption to traffic heading toward the Pļavnieki district.
Medics arrived at the scene and first examined the driver of the overturned car. Before professional help arrived, two passing drivers stopped to assist the driver, who was trapped upside down. The car's doors were so badly jammed that bystanders had to force them open to free him. According to one of the people who helped, the driver was conscious and tried to get out on his own.
Witnesses said one of the drivers had bleeding hands, though no other visible injuries were noted. However, his confused behavior and difficulty answering questions worried those nearby, who urged him to seek medical attention.
The driver of the Ford sustained fewer injuries and declined medical examination. He told police the collision felt like a sudden, violent impact; a refrigerator he had been transporting inside the car shattered the rear window on impact, while the vehicle's other damage resulted from contact with the other car.
Conflicting accounts emerged at the scene about what caused the crash. One driver claims the other car suddenly swerved into his lane while he was already braking. Another version suggests an older driver may have failed to notice a car already in the lane he was merging into. The driver in question denies this version of events. Police are still investigating the exact circumstances of the crash.
