Two mass shootings in South Africa leave at least 27 dead
Two separate mass shootings over the weekend in South Africa left at least 27 people dead. Police have opened investigations into both attacks, with no arrests made so far.
South Africa's police service reported on Sunday that two separate mass shooting incidents over the weekend left at least 27 people dead.
Tavern attack near Johannesburg
On Saturday night, at around 9:30 pm, gunmen opened fire at a bar to the west of Johannesburg where patrons were drinking both inside and outside. Police said the attackers first shot at people outside before entering the tavern and continuing to fire on those inside. The suspects were reportedly armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols, and allegedly searched some patrons and stole their cellphones before fleeing in two unidentified vehicles. Two vehicles were also set alight during the attack. Thirteen men and four women were killed. Local police have launched an investigation, deploying detectives and specialised units to track down the suspects, though no arrests have been made so far.
Separate shooting near Cape Town
In a separate incident, gunmen entered an entertainment venue selling braaied meat (shisanyama) in Lwandle, near Cape Town, at approximately 1:46 am on Sunday and opened fire on patrons. Five people died at the scene, while five more died after being taken to medical facilities. Eleven others are receiving treatment for their injuries. Police have opened investigations into murder and attempted murder. The identities of the victims will be released once their next of kin have been notified.
