Two powerful earthquakes hit Venezuela on the evening of June 24, leaving at least 164 dead and 971 injured, according to acting President Delcy Rodríguez, citing reports from Associated Press, CNN and Reuters.
The hardest-hit area is the state of La Guaira, located on the coast north of the capital Caracas. Rescue teams are being deployed from other parts of the country. Rodríguez stated that authorities are making the most of daylight hours to speed up rescue operations, as people are believed to be trapped under rubble. Dozens of buildings have collapsed.
Earlier reports indicated 32 deaths and 700 injuries, but the figures were later updated. Reuters, citing the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), noted that the death toll could exceed 10,000. The earthquakes had magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5.
