The South Kurzeme municipality tourism centre invites people to a hike in Purmsāti, Virga parish, on Saturday, 14 November. It will be the ninth stage this year of the “IzPĒDO Dienvidkurzemi” hiking series.

The tourism centre of South Kurzeme municipality in western Latvia is inviting people to a hike in Purmsāti, in Virga parish, on Saturday, 14 November, starting at 11:00. It will be the ninth stage this year of the hiking series “IzPĒDO Dienvidkurzemi” (roughly, “Explore South Kurzeme”), in which participants set out together with a group called the “Pēdu deldētājiem” (“foot wearers”).
The route includes several stops where participants can get to know the surroundings of Purmsāti and listen to stories about the history of the area.
History of Purmsāti
The name of the Purmsāti manor appears in written records as early as 1357. From the manor era, a park, several buildings and an avenue of trees, where chestnuts once grew, have survived.
The Dzērvju ugunskapi, ancient burial sites, point to an even older past. Because they are close to the manor hill and the valley, archaeologists have suggested that the manor centre formed on the site of an old Curonian settlement.
What to bring
Organisers recommend choosing clothing suited to the weather and comfortable footwear. Participants are also advised to bring a warm drink and snacks.
