On July 31, State Police detained a woman born in 1999 in Daugavpils after finding five packages of narcotic substances in her possession. Operational information indicated the drugs were meant to be passed to someone held in a detention facility.

The detention resulted from cooperation between the Southern Latgale unit of the State Police's Latgale regional department, officers from the Riga regional department, and staff of the Prisons Administration. While verifying information about a suspected illegal drug operation, officers seized 60 Clonazepam tablets and 50 Subutex tablets from the woman.

Criminal case opened

A criminal case has been initiated under the Criminal Law provision covering the unauthorized bringing in or handing over of prohibited substances, weapons or other banned items to a person held in short-term detention or in prison. The law provides for a penalty of up to 10 years' imprisonment for this offense, with an optional probation supervision period of up to three years.

Because the drugs never reached their intended recipient, the case is also classified as an attempted crime — a deliberate act aimed at committing an offense that was not completed due to circumstances beyond the perpetrator's control.

Investigators are continuing to establish all the circumstances of the case. Police note that the woman is presumed innocent until her guilt is proven in accordance with the law.
