CSDD: Truck likely failed to notice left turn signal before fatal Ventspils highway crash

A serious road accident occurred on Sunday on the A10 highway, commonly known as the Ventspils highway, resulting in one fatality. On Monday, Latvia's Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD) presented its preliminary account of how the crash likely unfolded.

According to CSDD's initial assessment, the driver of the car who died in the crash was probably not responsible for causing it. The car was struck from behind by a truck that, based on early findings, most likely failed to notice the car was signaling a left turn.

The impact pushed the car into the opposite lane of traffic, where the situation escalated further. The driver of the car did not survive.

CSDD stressed that the information released so far represents only a preliminary, probable version of events, based on the data and circumstances available at the scene so far. The exact circumstances and the question of responsibility will be determined by a further investigation.

The crash again draws attention to the importance of attentiveness and safe following distances among truck drivers on Latvia's highways, particularly in locations where vehicles ahead may be turning across oncoming traffic.
