Data Inspectorate to decide on possible compensation for CSDD data case

Latvia's Transport Ministry has clarified its position on possible compensation for clients of the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD) whose personal data was obtained from the agency's information technology system.

According to the ministry, the decisive factor in this matter will be a ruling from the Data State Inspectorate. This means the question of whether, and to what extent, affected clients might be entitled to compensation does not rest with the ministry or CSDD itself, but rather depends on the assessment of the supervisory authority.

Role of the Data Inspectorate

The Data State Inspectorate is the body responsible for overseeing personal data protection in Latvia and for reviewing cases where data protection violations are suspected. It is this authority that will issue the ruling determining the next steps regarding CSDD client data obtained from the directorate's system.

With this statement, the Transport Ministry has essentially shifted responsibility for the final decision to the specialized supervisory body, emphasizing that its assessment will be the determining factor in resolving the compensation question.
