In Colombia's Chocó department, home mainly to Afro-Colombian and Indigenous communities, conditions are worsening in the aftermath of an earthquake that struck last week. The region's governor has warned that those who survived the quake now confront pain, hunger and homelessness.

Chocó is among Colombia's poorest and historically most marginalized regions, and its predominantly Afro-Colombian and Indigenous population has long faced limited access to state resources and infrastructure. The earthquake has deepened this existing vulnerability, leaving residents without shelter and basic necessities.

The governor's statement signals a difficult road ahead for the region, one that will require both immediate humanitarian assistance and longer-term support to address the earthquake's aftermath.
