Latvia's cybersecurity authority CERT.lv said on Wednesday, 21 October, that it cannot currently confirm a single successful attack on significant state resources. The attacks are linked to a global vulnerability affecting data systems. This means the country's most important digital systems have so far withstood attempts to breach them.

The assessment was given by CERT.lv deputy head Varis Teivāns during a special news broadcast on Latvian Television. CERT.lv is the Latvian institution that deals with information technology security and responds to cyber incidents.

Teivāns said that artificial intelligence bots are trying to carry out attacks, but these attempts have been unsuccessful. At the same time, he did not rule out that an attack could succeed against a less significant resource. The situation therefore continues to be monitored, and it cannot be claimed that the risks have been eliminated entirely.

Expert view

Cybersecurity expert Strazdiņš, who also spoke in the broadcast, praised the responsible institutions for acting promptly. In his view, the authorities reacted quickly once the vulnerability emerged.

The source gives no further details on what exactly the vulnerability is, which resources were targeted, or what measures were taken. What is clearly known is only that by the end of Wednesday CERT.lv had not recorded any successful attack on significant state resources.
