Businessman and football club owner shot dead in Bulgaria
Businessman Ilijan Filipov, owner of a major transport and logistics company and majority shareholder of football club Botev, was shot dead in Plovdiv, Bulgaria overnight on Wednesday. Police closed main roads into the city as an investigation began.
A well-known local businessman, Ilijan Filipov, was shot dead in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv early Wednesday, September 30, at around 1 a.m. local time, British outlet The Independent reported.
Filipov owned one of the largest transport and logistics companies in Bulgaria. He was also the majority shareholder of football club Botev, where he served as club president.
The shooting took place at his home. Following the incident, law enforcement closed the main roads leading into and out of Plovdiv, a city located roughly 145 kilometers southeast of the Bulgarian capital, Sofia.
Investigation underway
Local prosecutors confirmed that all possible theories regarding the motive and circumstances of the killing are currently being examined. No further details about suspects or a possible motive have been made public so far.
About football club Botev
Botev is the oldest professional football club in Bulgaria, founded in 1912. The team currently competes in the country's top division, but despite its long and rich history, it now ranks as a mid-table side in the domestic championship.
