With eight rounds remaining after round 30, Brazil's Série B championship is entering a decisive phase, with at least ten clubs still in contention for a spot in next season's top-flight Série A.

A new promotion format

Unlike previous years, when the top four teams were automatically promoted, this season only the champion and runner-up go up directly. The remaining two promotion spots will be decided by a playoff among the teams finishing 3rd through 6th: 3rd plays 6th, and 4th plays 5th, with the higher-seeded side (3rd and 4th) hosting the decisive leg, according to O POVO columnist Sérgio Rêdes.

Vila Nova on top, but facing the toughest run

According to O POVO, league leader Vila Nova had 54 points after round 30, six points ahead of seventh-placed CRB and Operário (48 points each), while a second group led by Sport sits on 44. Outlet ge.globo calculated that Vila Nova actually faces the hardest remaining schedule of all contenders, with a difficulty score of 367 points, since it must still play Juventude, Fortaleza, Novorizontino and Criciúma — currently ranked 2nd through 5th. Sport has the second-toughest run (360), while Criciúma (285) and Cuiabá (286) have, on paper, the easiest remaining fixtures.

Promotion odds

Citing a model from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), UOL reported the following promotion probabilities after round 30: Vila Nova 58.3%, Juventude 40.1%, Fortaleza 36.4%, Novorizontino 21.6%, Criciúma 14.5%, Atlético-GO 12.9%, CRB 9.6%, Operário-PR 6%, and just 0.2% each for Cuiabá and Sport.

Fight against relegation

At the bottom of the table, the picture is equally tense. Per O POVO, Ceará sits on 36 points, just above the drop zone, and needs nine more points to feel safe; the team's recent improvement has been credited partly to the return of 38-year-old defender Luiz Otávio after nearly a year out injured. Ceará leads Avaí, the first team inside the relegation zone, by six points, and the two sides meet this coming Saturday in Florianópolis. UOL adds that Ponte Preta and América-MG have effectively already been relegated, unable to reach the 45 points considered necessary for safety, while Londrina, after losing to leader Vila Nova, now faces a 90% relegation risk according to the UFMG model. Avaí's situation also worsened following a derby loss to Criciúma, as the gap to safety widened to five points after Botafogo-SP's win that round.
