Brazil in Kolkata: a historic match under maximum security

Brazil's national football team arrived in Kolkata on Thursday for a friendly against India, accompanied by an unprecedented security operation following a December incident during Lionel Messi's visit. The Saturday, October 3 match at Salt Lake Stadium pits the world's 5th-ranked side against the 138th-ranked hosts.

Arrival under heavy protection

Brazil's national team, led by coach Carlo Ancelotti, arrived in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, on Thursday ahead of a friendly match against India. According to rdcsport.cd, the delegation was headed by Marquinhos, alongside Vinicius Junior, Gabriel Magalhaes and Bruno Guimaraes. Even before the squad landed, eight private security agents — South American specialists and former military personnel — had already arrived in the city, tasked with controlling every movement of the team during the tour.

This dedicated Brazilian security unit works alongside Indian police to guarantee protection meeting international standards. The visiting team's hotel has been turned into a tightly guarded facility, with round-the-clock surveillance on every floor, controlled access and a reinforced outer perimeter, while training grounds have been fenced off with extra barriers.

Fallout from a December incident

Such extensive security measures are not accidental. As reported by rdcsport.cd, in December the same Salt Lake Stadium hosted a chaotic scene during Lionel Messi's visit, when angry spectators tore out seats after VIP convoys blocked their view of the pitch. That episode triggered a complete overhaul of crowd management: this time, official convoys will follow clearly marked routes, and VIP zones have been redesigned to avoid provoking similar tension in the stands.

Contrasting form heading into the match

On the pitch, the two sides find themselves in starkly different situations. According to Vietnam.vn, India, ranked 138th in the world, have failed to win any of their last five matches — three straight defeats followed two draws. Still, the hosts head into the game with a measure of confidence after a 1-1 draw against Panama at Sree Kanteerava Stadium last week.

Brazil, by contrast, arrive as the world's 5th-ranked team, unbeaten in their last five matches with four wins and one draw. After two friendlies against Australia, Ancelotti's side is using this match as a testing ground for new attacking combinations.

The match kicks off on Saturday, October 3, at around 21:00 local time at the iconic Salt Lake Stadium, where intense interest in Brazil's stars is matched by hopes for an orderly, secure event following December's incident.
