Former Policeman Convicted of Killing 5-Year-Old Kyrylo Tliavov Mobilized into Ukrainian Armed Forces

Ivan Prykhodko, a former policeman convicted of negligent homicide of 5-year-old Kyrylo Tliavov, has been mobilized into the Ukrainian Armed Forces, prompting his defense to seek a halt in the appeal process, while the victim's family views this as an attempt to evade punishment.

Ivan Prykhodko, a former police officer sentenced for the negligent killing of 5-year-old Kyrylo Tliavov, has been mobilized into the Ukrainian Armed Forces. As a result, his lawyer has requested a complete suspension or pause in the appellate proceedings. Meanwhile, representatives of the deceased boy's family consider this an attempt to avoid responsibility and will demand the cancellation of the conscription order.

According to the defense attorney, Prykhodko was mobilized by Territorial Recruitment Center officials on March 19 directly from the street. Despite having three children, he had not applied for a deferment from military service. He is currently in the Donetsk region as part of a unit, likely a separate battalion of unmanned systems.

During a session at the Kyiv Appellate Court on June 5, the lawyer submitted a certificate confirming Prykhodko's enrollment in a military unit and filed a motion to separate his case into a separate proceeding and suspend the review. Prosecutors requested a one-month postponement to verify the information and determine whether the accused can participate in sessions online.

Elvira Lazarenko, representing the Tliavov family, stated that the mobilization is an attempt to evade responsibility. She noted a risk that the appellate court could overturn the sentence regarding the more serious charge of hooliganism, as the statute of limitations for negligent homicide expired two years ago. The family plans to appeal to the Ministry of Defense and the military unit to cancel the mobilization order.

Recall that on May 31, 2019, in Pereiaslav, two intoxicated policemen along with friends engaged in recreational shooting at cans in a private area. One bullet ricocheted and hit 5-year-old Kyrylo Tliavov in the head while he played in a neighboring yard. The boy died on June 3 without regaining consciousness. In May 2023, Prykhodko was sentenced to 4 years in prison for negligent homicide, but due to time already served in detention, he had about six months left.
