Former Brazil national team defender Ricardo Rocha was detained on Wednesday morning at Rio de Janeiro International Airport as he prepared to fly to the United States to cover the 2026 World Cup as an expert.
According to Brazilian outlet Metrópoles, after completing border control procedures, Rocha was informed of an active arrest warrant related to unpaid child support. The arrest was requested by the 16th Family Court of Fortaleza in Ceará state. Court documents indicated the former footballer owed 2,414 Brazilian reais (just over 400 euros) in child support payments.
The court order stated that Rocha should be released immediately upon payment of the debt, unless there were other legal obstacles or new arrest warrants. Rocha's representatives said in a statement that the situation arose from a disagreement over the amounts specified in the court documents. Rocha expressed regret that the information became public before the matter was clarified.
"Given the explanations provided by the defense, the imposed restriction has been lifted, and Ricardo Rocha will be able to continue his normal work schedule, including traveling to the United States to cover the World Cup," the statement said. According to media reports, the former footballer later paid the requested sum.
Rocha was one of Brazil's most prominent football figures in the 1980s and 1990s. He represented the Brazilian national team in 38 matches from 1987 to 1995 and was part of the squad that won Brazil's fourth World Cup title in 1994.
