The European Athletics Championships held in Birmingham once again placed the marathon among its most anticipated and central events. The 42.195-kilometre race drew significant attention, confirming its status as one of the classic disciplines of any major athletics gathering.

In the women's race, Finnish long-distance runner Alisa Vainio claimed the title, while the men's marathon was won by Germany's Amanal Petros. Although both athletes reached the same outcome — a gold medal in their respective events — the source notes that the paths they took to victory were entirely different from one another.

A traditional highlight

The marathon has long been regarded as one of the most physically and tactically demanding disciplines at any major athletics championship, and Birmingham proved no exception. Covering the full 42-kilometre-plus distance requires not only endurance but also careful pacing, which is why marathon results are often seen as among the highlights of a championship.

With their victories in Birmingham, both Alisa Vainio and Amanal Petros joined the ranks of athletes crowned European marathon champions.
