BBC Wales to broadcast Cymru Premier matches live
The BBC and the Football Association of Wales have agreed a new three-year deal for free-to-air live coverage of the Cymru Premier, as the league expands to 16 clubs.
Wales' top football division, established in 1992, enters its 35th season with significant changes, including a shift to predominantly Friday evening fixtures. Alongside this, the BBC and the Football Association of Wales (FAW) have announced a new three-year partnership bringing free-to-air live coverage of Cymru Premier matches to BBC Wales.
League grows to 16 clubs
The number of teams in the Cymru Premier has risen from 12 to 16, with Llandudno, Airbus UK, Holywell Town, Trefelin BGC, Cambrian United and Ammanford all earning promotion into the top flight.
BBC's return welcomed
Jack Sharp, the FAW's head of domestic leagues, said he was pleased to welcome the BBC back to Welsh domestic football, describing the agreement as an important step in raising the league's profile both within Wales and across the wider UK. He noted that the volume of free live broadcasts will double compared with the previous season.
According to Sharp, the free-to-air coverage will work alongside the existing Cymru Football TV service, which offers access to every match, creating a broadcasting setup that serves different types of supporters — those who want to watch every fixture and those who prefer selected free matches on television. He added that the BBC's involvement is expected to raise awareness of the competition, draw in new audiences, and support the league's broader growth ambitions.
