Entire leadership team of Bauska town primary school resigns weeks before new school year

The Bauska Municipality says the simultaneous departure of Bauska town primary school director Evita Zeltiņa-Kļaviņa and her two deputies came as a surprise, since there had been no prior signs of such a decision.

The municipality disputes the former director's claim that it was already aware of problems that would seriously hinder the school's future operation. Zeltiņa-Kļaviņa had previously explained that the leadership team's decision was mutually agreed, as they no longer saw a realistic way to keep the school as a legally independent institution given tasks set by the municipality in May.

According to the municipality, the director's official resignation cited health reasons, while the deputies' resignation letters gave no reason at all. After receiving the resignation, both the head of the Education Department and the deputy mayor tried to persuade the director to stay, but she did not change her decision even after being addressed during a council meeting.

School network situation in the region

From September 1, 2026, 17 general education institutions will continue operating in Bauska Municipality. The exact number of students will be known after August 25, as students continue moving between schools until then.

Six schools in the municipality remain under monitoring until the end of the year, following council decisions adopted on May 28 regarding possible reorganization from 2027. For Bauska town primary school, the possible scenario involves merging with another educational institution while keeping primary education programs running in the current building. A decision on merging the school with Bauska Secondary School No. 2 was postponed at an August 6 meeting until a new director is selected through competition.

The municipality stresses that no sharp decline in student numbers is expected in the near future, though over a longer horizon of six to seven years, numbers could decrease significantly.
