Bauska council postpones primary school reorganisation, will urgently seek headteacher
Bauska Municipality Council decided on Thursday not to decide on the reorganisation of Bauska City Primary School for the time being. The mayor urged members to first announce a competition to find a new school director.
The Bauska Municipality Council did not support the reorganisation of Bauska City Primary School during its extraordinary meeting on Thursday. Instead, councillors unanimously agreed to postpone matters related to the school and to urgently search for a new director after the entire management team submitted their resignations.
At the start of the meeting, Council Chairman Aivars Mačeks (National Alliance) called on his colleagues not to make hasty decisions. He said school staff and parents were urging the council not to decide on reorganisation but to launch a recruitment contest for the principal post. According to him, a new leader could attract pupils and thereby protect the institution from reorganisation. Mačeks argued that the council could give the school a chance to save itself and decide on its future after the competition concludes.
The only issue the council considered during the session was renaming Bauska 2nd Secondary School to Bauska Secondary School. The change was approved because the previous name had lost its practical significance.
The municipality had previously planned to monitor Bauska City Primary School until the end of 2026 to assess its compliance with national quality criteria. In May, the school director was tasked with opening special education programmes for students with intellectual disabilities by 1 September 2026 and ensuring their implementation in as many special classes as possible. However, the situation has changed significantly, as the director and the entire management team have resigned.
In six schools across Bauska Municipality, pupil numbers do not meet the established indicators and forecasts do not show positive dynamics. These include grades 7–9 at Misa, Īslīce, Code and Bauska City primary schools, and grades 10–12 at Pilsrundāle and Skaistkalne secondary schools. Although reorganisation was initially planned for these schools, the May council meeting set a uniform monitoring period until 31 December 2026 for all of them.
