The film "Citizen Vigilante" stars Armie Hammer as Sanders, a former US soldier who inherits his father's real estate empire in an unnamed European country. Angered by what he perceives as a Muslim takeover of Europe, he embarks on a vigilante killing spree targeting migrants, youths, and judges. The character is emboldened by social media clips praising his violent campaign.
White supremacists and far-right groups have enthusiastically embraced the movie. One member of a far-right channel wrote, "Maybe violence against migrants is what is needed," while another added, "It's the only way." The film promotes the baseless "great replacement" conspiracy theory that Muslim immigrants have overrun the continent.
Directed by Uwe Boll, often criticized as one of the worst directors of all time, the film was released in June shortly after anti-immigrant riots in the UK and Northern Ireland. Boll has stated he is not anti-Muslim but warned that "radical Islamistic Muslims" will take over in 30 years, hating gays, Jews, Christians, and Western way of life.
The film was effectively banned in Boll's native Germany for inciting violence against immigrants. However, after Elon Musk shared it on X, it garnered millions of views. It also trended on Apple and Amazon streaming services. Some far-right groups held online screenings.
Hammer reportedly disavowed the film, calling it "disgusting" and "hateful," but Boll disputed this, noting Hammer's promotional interviews. Far-right figures like Chaya Raichik, Jack Posobiec, and Nick Fuentes praised the film. Some white supremacists criticized it due to Hammer's Jewish heritage or a sex scene with a Latina woman, leading to antisemitic comments and calls for a "no degeneracy cut."
