Officials in the Bahamas have confirmed that nine passengers and a pilot died in a small plane crash. The Cessna 402 aircraft, operated by local airline Flamingo Air, was making a short flight from Lynden Pindling International Airport near Nassau to San Andros Airport. According to a statement from the country's Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority, the plane encountered difficulties as it approached landing and crashed into bushes.

The fatal crash took place on the day of the Bahamas' 53rd independence anniversary. Prime Minister Philip Davis told a media conference: "Today is a day of celebration but it has become a day of mourning." He added that once again, a chapter in the nation's story had been marked by tragedy. Davis initially reported one survivor but confirmed hours later that the person had died from their injuries. The details of those on board, including ages and names, have not been released.

The Ministry of Aviation announced it was temporarily suspending Flamingo Air's air operator certificate as a precautionary safety measure. The ministry stressed that the grounding should not be treated as an adverse compliance action against the airline. It also noted that two safety incidents had occurred on Friday. Aviation Minister JoBeth Coleby-Davis told reporters that one plane had routed back to Nassau after the pilot reported an issue, and a fire broke out after landing but passengers had disembarked. The BBC has contacted Flamingo Air for comment. In remarks to local media, the airline said it was gathering details and committed to cooperating with the relevant authorities.
