An incident at an emergency department in Queensland, Australia, has drawn widespread attention after an aggressive, intoxicated patient attacked a nurse who turned out to be far more capable of defending himself than expected.
The encounter took place in October 2024 at Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Hospital, though nurse Daniel Nelson only recently shared the surveillance footage on social media. The video shows the patient, who had earlier spat on the floor, sworn at staff and behaved disrespectfully, being escorted out of the building. As the pair passed through the doors, the man suddenly turned and began throwing objects at the nurse.
An unexpected opponent
What the attacker did not know was that Nelson had practiced jiu-jitsu for more than a decade. Reacting instantly, the nurse subdued the man, brought him to the floor and held him in a firm lock using his arms and legs until security staff arrived, remaining calm throughout.
A message about violence against healthcare workers
When sharing the footage, Nelson stressed that violence against healthcare staff should never be treated as "just part of the job." He said such behavior is completely unacceptable and that intoxication is no excuse. He also expressed appreciation for colleagues who continue coming to work and helping people despite facing such incidents.
The video has gone viral online, with viewers praising the nurse's self-defense skills and widely condemning any form of aggression toward medical staff.
