Supreme Court: Using Rat Emoji in Student Correspondence Violates Ethical Standards
The Supreme Court has ruled that a student's use of a rat emoji to mock others who reported academic integrity violations violates the university's ethics code. The court rejected the student's cassation appeal regarding a disciplinary penalty.

The Supreme Court of Latvia has rejected a student's application to initiate cassation proceedings concerning a disciplinary sanction imposed on him. The case involved a situation where the student insulted other individuals for reporting breaches of academic integrity, including through the use of a rat emoji.
The court found that such behavior violates the norms of the university's ethics code. The use of a rat emoji in academic-related student correspondence was deemed offensive and inappropriate for the academic environment. The Supreme Court concluded that the disciplinary penalty was justifiably applied and refused to open cassation proceedings.
